Art Exhibit - Haunting the Mind: Beings That Fly

  • The Norman Depot 200 South Jones Norman Oklahoma 73069 United States (map)

Artist Connie Seabourn says she has always been intrigued by flying and dreams of flying. Paintings following that theme will be on view in “Haunting the Mind: Beings that Fly”, an exhibit of Seabourn's work opening at The Depot Gallery, 200 S. Jones, on January 8, 2016 with a 2nd Friday reception from 6 to 9 pm.

“Most of my work is ethereal, dreamy and narrative” says Seabourn. “Many of my works picture flying people as well as birds and winged insects.” Dreams, explorations of love, motherhood, peace, nature, native peoples, myths, religions and spirituality are other favorite subjects. Literature and music inspire her. “My art continues to reflect my journey and growth as I attempt to make connections and gain understandings” she tells us.

Seabourn works in several media but is perhaps best known for her delicate watercolors & bright, bold serigraphs. “My favorite medium is usually whatever is in my hands” she says, “but through the years I've especially grown to love watercolor. It easily lends itself to the dreamlike quality of my work and subjects.”

Connie will offer a free demonstration of her watercolor techniques on Sunday, January 24 beginning at 2:00 pm in The Depot Gallery. All are welcome.

The daughter of internationally renowned Oklahoma City artist Bert Seabourn, Connie says she learned a lot from her father. She began exhibiting in adult competitions and museum shows in 1969. After receiving a BFA from the University of Oklahoma in 1980, she began a full-time, self-supporting career in fine art alone.

She has since exhibited widely including at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, Washington, DC; The Indian Arts and Crafts Association, Albuquerque, NM; Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis MN; American Museum of Natural History, Anniston, AL; San Diego Museum of Man, San Diego, CA; Heard Museum, Phoenix, AZ; Oklahoma Museum of Art, OKC; Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, Norman, OK; Oklahoma State Capitol Governor's Gallery, OKC; National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, OKC; Cherokee National Museum, Tahlequah, OK; the Five Civilized Tribes Museum, Muskogee, OK; Red Earth Festival, OKC; Festival of the Arts, OKC; and Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonials, Gallup, NM, among many others. Connie Seabourn's work is in numerous public and private collections.

A second reception for Seabourn will be held on Friday, February 12 from 6 to 9 pm, and will feature the music of Miss Brown to You from 7:30 to 9 pm. Haunting the Mind: Beings that Fly continues through February 26, 2016. Depot hours are 8 am to 2 pm Monday-Friday and by appointment. There is no admission charge.

Exhibits at The Depot are made possible, in part, by grants from the Norman Arts Council and the Oklahoma Arts Council.
