This summer the Firehouse Art Center (FAC) is spotlighting the creativity of its youth and teen students with an exhibition in the FAC Gallery. The exhibition will juxtapose artwork from the FAC’s College Portfolio Program (CPP) and Youth Ceramics classes, featuring the CPP teen’s self-portraits, which are required by most college applications, and a variety of the best work created by the ceramics students from the past year. The Firehouse hopes this will inspire other teens in the community, while showcasing the hard work of the FAC’s talented teen students to the Norman community. The Youth & Teen Exhibition will be on display in the FAC Gallery through July 22, 2017.
The Firehouse Art Center’s Youth & Teen programs provide intensive visual arts experiences for adolescents ages 10 to 18 seeking the opportunity to engage with accessible, dedicated high-level visual arts programming. For the past eight years, the Firehouse has offered its College Portfolio Program, Youth Pottery, and Teen Ceramics courses for pre-teen and teenage students interested in a rigorous arts curriculum. All of the FAC’s Youth & Teen classes, in keeping with the Firehouse’s overarching curriculum guidelines, provide multidisciplinary curriculum that foster alternative methods of learning and multiple intelligences in conjunction with visual arts education. Youth Ceramics instructor Joe Cox said of the program, “It’s important to have projects that challenge students; working within the parameters of specific projects and lesson plans is the best way to promote greater creativity and problem solving skills.”
The Firehouse Art Center is funded in part by select grants from the Oklahoma Arts Council, Norman Arts Council, Allied Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the City of Norman, as well as corporate sponsorships from Republic Bank & Trust and Fowler Automotive. The FAC’s programming would not be possible without the support of individual donors and memberships.
The Firehouse Art Center is open Monday - Friday, 9:30 am - 5:30 pm, Saturday, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
